- Lionel Hichens, Lionel Curtis, and the late Maxwell Balfour joined the C.I.V. from New College in January, 1900,as members of the Inns of Court Cyclist Section -- I believe the first cyclist unit that ever served oversea with a Regular infantry brigade. This unit served as despatch riders to Lord Kitchener when, after the fall of Bloemfontein, he led a force against rebels in the north-west of Cape Colony. - Son Lionel Maxwell Joachim Balfour, b 1906, d 1973. He was an aviation pioneer in the 1930s. His company (Portsmouth, Southsea and Isle of Wight Aviation Ltd.) ran the 'Spithead Express' air ferry service, which operated from Ryde Airport, 1932-1939. It also developed the 'Portsmouth Aerocar', exhibited at the 1947 SBAC Show held at Radlett, but never put into production.
