 | William Williams (1752-1818) Portrait by his grandson Frederick Tatham, in the style of Holbein. Watercolour miniature on ivory, 9.7 x 7.6 cm. One of a pair, with portrait of his second wife. 1830. Both inscribed on reverse. In the collection of the Yale Center of British Art, New Haven, CT.
Label on verso ca. 2000: Peter Nahum, Leicester Street Galleries, 5 Ryder St, London.
Reference to Christie & Manson sale of 1849: Catalogue of the beautiful collection of pictures of the very highest class, of William Williams Hope, Esq., partly from Rushton Hall, Northamptonshire.
Another source dates the 2 portraits to 1828 and says they were sold by the family in 2001.
There has to be some question regarding the date and the subject:
- the similarity of the names William Williams and William Williams Hope warns of possible confusion;
- William Williams died in 1818, 10 to 12 years before the portrait's stated date;
- he is not known to have married twice:;
- there is no recorded Tatham family connection with the 1849 vendor William Williams Hope (1802-1855), who lived in Paris and never married.
A possible link could be with William Williams Hope's cousin Thomas Hope (1769-1831), who moved in the same circles as Frederick Tatham's father Charles Heathcote Tatham, and shared his artistic and design tastes. |
