- Lorenzo Lucena (1806-81) was the first Teacher of Spanish. At the age of 21, he had been appointed professor of theology in Córdoba. His conversion to evangelical Protestantism caused a scandal and, pursued by the Inquisition, he fled to Gibraltar, where he became an honorary canon (1842-60). He then became head of the Anglican Mission for Spanish-speaking residents and visiting seamen in Liverpool, in which city he also taught Spanish language and literature, in the Royal Institute and Queen's College. He took up his Oxford appointment in 1858. Created MA in 1877, he remained in post until his death. His publications included a translation of a work by the Bishop of Durham, John Cosin; a revision of the translation of the New Testament by the Catholic bishop Félix Amat; and, for OUP, a revision of the famous Castilian translation of the Bible by Reina and Valera (Amsterdam, 1602), which was published in 1862 and distributed widely throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
