- The formation of the RE Light Railway Companies in early 1917 was an innovation that transformed the operational abilities of the army. A Company consisted of approximately 200 men, in a number of trades: Drivers, Brakesmen, Guards, Wagon Repairers, Repair Shop Engineers, Traffic controllers and Storesmen. The job of the Companies was [usually?] to run the trains, with the tracks being laid by RE Railway Construction Companies. - 240th (Forward) Light Railway Operating Company appears to be the last of the companies to be formed, on 01 Nov 1918, and the last to be disbanded, at the end of Jul 1919. Its mission by then was maintenance, construction and reconstruction, rather than railway operating as such. Its War Diary is deposited in the National Archives.
Capt. Simpkinson was O/C for the final 6 weeks, from 15 Jun 1919.
