St Peter, Pietermaritzburg, NatalNotes: The original Anglican cathedral. Pietermaritzburg has had three Anglican cathedrals. The first, St. Peter's in Church St, was completed in 1857 by J W Colenso, Bishop of Natal. In the "Colenso controversy" W K Macrorie was appointed Bishop of Maritzburg and chose St. Saviour's Church (first opened in 1868) as his cathedral in 1877. Long after the healing of the schism after 1891, St Saviour's was demolished and the Cathedral of the Holy Nativity was built alongside St Peter's. ![]()
