St Mary, ShortlandsNotes: First built in the 1860s the outstanding feature of this ragstone structure was a tower and spire. Originally seating 460, its size was soon increased by 100 and served the local population well until the Second World War when it was seriously damaged by a landmine during the Battle of Britain in 1940 and further by a V1 doodlebug in 1944. Curiously, the spire fell to the ground in one piece, and, for years after, local children used to joke of ‘running all the way up the spire’ to the astonishment of non-locals! The church was rebuilt as it can be seen today in the 1950s. ![]()
