McGillivray], age 20 b VA; homesteader at Huron, SD, 1881-1888; in practice at Tacoma, WA, 1888-1895; divorce suit filed by Mary at Seattle, Dec 1894; moved to California 1895; served as naval surgeon from 1898 during & after Spanish-American War; practised medicine in Manila; married Rita Gabaretta in 1900; 1 child as of 1903; then practising & resid Paso Robles, CA.
Family [verbatim, incl suspected inaccuracies]: A native of London, England, Dr. Ross was born March 3, 1845, a son of Alexander and Mary [née Coe] Ross, natives respectively of Edinburgh, Scotland, and England. The paternal grandfather was born in Scotland, and during his entire active life was superintendent gardener for the Duke of Arthol [Atholl/Athole]. Alexander Ross was receiver for London Gas, Light and Coke Company, and in return for years of faithful service was pensioned by the company up to the time of his death at the age of eighty-six years. His wife, whose father was born in Wales, and became a farmer in England, lived to be over ninety years of age. [final sentence not yet reconciled with any known sources]

- son Charles Ross, b abt 1859, is said to have embezzled lots of money. The Pinkertons chased him all the way to St. Louis and arrested him 30 Dec 1894. He was sentenced to 18 months of hard labor. [8]
