Southend, 1942 Inscribed 'From N. Sotheby Pitcher to Delphine Tatham', titled and dated, watercolour, 16" x 23".
Neville Sotheby Pitcher (1889-1959) focused his artistic vision toward seascapes and landscapes. His broad and sometimes sweeping brush strokes could bring motion and emotion to his factually still works. Pitcher was also active, as of 1940, in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves at Southend-on-sea. His main address was Rye, Sussex, along the southwest coast of the Dover strait, where he was a dedicated observer and sporadic participant of all sorts of sea activities, from leisure sailings to deep-sea rescues. In addition to his naval service, Pitcher was very active with numerous memberships and exhibitions. He showed regularly with the Royal Society of Marine Artists; Royal Institute of Oil Painters; Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour; Royal Academy and also Royal West of England Academy. [4, 8, 10] |
- death registered 22 months afterwards
- After her death Delphine's effects passed to her distant relative Major Michael G Hawtrey, including a collection of Tatham photos and papers. She had believed that after the death of her friend and 4th cousin Eva Katherine Amabel Tatham (1896-1985) she had no remaining Tatham relatives. She never knew about her father's first cousin Berrisford Stanley Tatham and his family. Fortunately Major Hawtrey was able to trace them and thus ensure that Delphine's collection was preserved.
