- Scholarship to Kings College Cambridge. Called to the bar in 1871 and built successful practice in Merseyside. Staunch Gladstone supporter and campaigner for working peoples rights, trades unions, quality education for all and social justice. As Liberal he stood unsuccessfully for Parliament in Birkenhead 1885 and 1886 then in St Helens in 1896 where he lost by 60 votes. Appointed to Queen's Bench Division 1892. Appointed Lord Justice of Appeal 1907. Fellow of British Academy 1909. Specialised in Shipping and Commercial Law. Chairman of International Law Association in which he campaigned for a permanent international body to resolve disputes between countries.
