- The writer and mystic Arthur Machen (1863-1947) was sent at the age of eleven to Hereford Cathedral School, where he received his excellent classical education. He was an able pupil, but remained an aloof one, interested already in the strange and arcane byways of literature and history. He showed much scholarly ability, but his parents could not afford to send him to Oxford in his father's footsteps.
