; Headmaster [11] |
- The "marks race" in preparatory and public schools is barring the entrance to universities of "good, hard-working, and cheerful" second and third class brains who can make a valuable contribution to university life and gain much themselves, Mr. R. J. Northcote-Green, headmaster of Worksop College, said tonight. Mr. Northcote-Green. who was giving the opening address to the refresher course organized by the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools in Oxford, stated: "The young man with a second or third class brain but with many fine qualities is invariably hawked around colleges in search of a place. It is encouraging to learn that Oxford is to consider a new method of selection. I hope that this will embrace a scheme whereby a better chance is given to a boy of reasonable academic potential but blessed with other gifts, such as leadership, a real interest in one of the arts, perhaps a boy keen on social service. In short, a boy who has something more than marks on his sheet. I believe that any university needs a considerable number of such boys for the good of its life." Many undergraduates were enduring nervous breakdowns or were on the verge of them. The cause was unremitting strain. Almost every undergraduate at Oxford or Cambridge had been recommended by his headmaster as likely to get a first or second class degree, otherwise he would not be considered or allowed to sit for a place.
