    • Linda Lois Melrose (Muessel), 62, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington, United Kingdom after a 14-year battle with cancer.
      She was the daughter of William W. and the late Lois J. Muessel of Newport and the wife of Angus J Melrose of Lymington, UK.
      Born in Duluth MN and raised in a military family, Linda attended public schools in Kodiak, Alaska, Duluth, Minnesota, Sault Ste Marie, Michigan and Newport. She graduated from Rogers High School in 1967. She also attended New England College in Henniker NH.
      She owned and operated Cloud Nine, a bed and bath shop, in the Brick Market Place during the Seventies and Eighties. Previously she had worked as a buyer for Bloomingdale's in New York City.
      She and Angus met in Newport in 1982 when he was a member of the Victory 12 Meter crew, which represented Britain in the '83 America's Cup Challenge. They were married in Newport in 1986.
      After her marriage she spent a year in Fremantle Western Australia for the '87 America's Cup before settling into her English home, which she decorated with great style. She also worked tirelessly to create and maintain a beautiful garden. Linda loved dogs and raised bearded collies, two of them show dogs.
      Her brothers, Robert W. Muessel and his wife, Martha, of Breckenridge, Colorado and Michael G. Muessel and his wife, Beverly, of Newport, two nephews, Michael C. Muessel of Denver, CO and William J. Muessel of Newport survive her.
      A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church on Broadway in Newport.
