- Molony, Rev. Henry William Elliott, born 14 Sept., 1858, son of Rev. Charles Walker Molony, Rector of West Worlington, entered S[chool] H[ouse] Sept., 1871, left July, 1878 (Prefect, 1876). Subsequently at All Souls' College, Oxon (First Class Theol.); B.A., 1881 ; M.A., 1886; Leeds Clergy School, 1882; Deacon, 1882; Priest, 1883; Curate of St. John, Hammersmith, 1882-5; Curate of St. Saviour, Hoxton, 1885-91. Now Vicar of Great Ilford. [A register of S. Nicholas college, Lancing, from its foundation at Shoreham in August, 1848 to the commencement of the month of November, 1900]
- Henry, four years younger than his brother Eustace, went on from Lancing, to which he gained a scholarship and where he won prizes for mathematics as well as classics, to Oxford, where he was Bible Clerk of All Souls College and obtained the distinction of first class honours in Theological Schools; and was thereafter ordained. He served his apprenticeship in curacies at Hammersmith and Hoxton in the East End of London. Then for twenty years, that is from 1892 to 1912, he was Vicar of Great Ilford in Essex; and then until 1918 Rector of Stevenage, Hertfordshire and Hon Canon of St. Albans. The year before he went to Great Ilford he had married Edith Tatham whom he had met while acting for his vicar on a holiday chaplaincy in Switzerland. She was the daughter of a clergyman and was studying singing with a view to taking it up as a profession; but abandoned her career on marriage.
The parish of Great Ilford, which they went to in 1892, was professionally a stirring challenge to Henry, because Ilford, a suburb of London, was clearly going to have to face an enormous expansion in the next few years. In the period of a little over twenty years that he spent there Henry worked himself to a standstill; and in the same twenty years, that is between 1892 and 1912, Edith produced a family of three sons and six daughters: only one less than her mother-in-law's total. At Ilford Henry added to his normal tasks by undertaking the additional duties of Rural Dean; and an honorary Canon of St. Albans as well as editor of the Diocesan Gazette; and all this in a parish which during the previous forty years had been allowed to run to seed by an incumbent whose interests were confined to fox-hunting. Two of the tasks facing Henry were the restoration of the ancient Church and the disposal of a gigantic rectory that was falling to bits. In the first he was successful before his death in 1918 at the age of sixty; his wife outlived him by thirty five years. [CBM]
