Notes: St John's Hostel was founded in 1918 by Revd Horace Coles as a refuge for boys orphaned by the 'flu epidemic and the World War. It stood in 12 acres of wooded land on the slopes of Table Mountain, in buildings grouped around an 18th century house "Bellevue". It was an Anglican foundation under the patronage of the Archbishop of Cape Town. In 1969 it was catering for 64 boys found to be in need of care. The then committee included a Mr D M Tatham, presumed to be Denis Mortimore Tatham (1920-2002).
