Bridewell, Barrack St, Warwick

Tree: Tatham
Notes: Separate to Warwick Prison, an 1806 map of Warwick and the 1851 Ordnance Survey map show a separate Bridewell at the NW end of Barrack Street. It was described in 1815 as being "a strong and handsome building, with a good stone front, and a garden before it". Records refer to inmates as being 'prisioners' and the 1851 map shows 'cells' marked. The institution was most likely a House of correction. The site was later occupied by Warwick Police Station. Today a multistorey carpark and the council building containing Warwick Library stand on the site. [Building History, England, accessed 20 Jan 2012]
