    Notes
    • Lord Bethell, a director of Barclays Bank Limited, and of Royal Exchange Assurance, died in a London nursing home on May 27.
The Right Hon. Sir John Henry Bethell, Bt., first Baron Bethell, of Romford, Essex, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom and first baronet of Park House, was born on September 23, 1861, son of George Bethell, of The Firs, South Woodford, Essex. In his early days his business was that of a land agent, auctioneer and surveyor, and he became prominently identified with municipal and local affairs in the East End of London. On two occasions he was mayor of West Ham and then he became the first mayor of East Ham, an office in which he served twice. A Liberal in politics, Bethell contested the Romford Division in 1894 and 1895 and the Northern Division of West Ham in 1900. In each case, however, he was unsuccessful and it was not until 1906 that, standing again for Romford, he defeated his Conservative opponent, Mr. L. Sinclair, by a majority of over 8,000 votes. Shortly after his arrival at Westminster he received the honour of knighthood. In the General Elections of 1910 Romford returned him again, and in 1911 he was created a baronet. In the General Election of 1918 Bethell contested the North Division of East Ham as a Coalition candidate and was duly elected, but in 1921 he announced his intention not to stand for Parliament again. The next year he was raised to the peerage, and the same year he purchased Canvey Island in Essex for 29,000. In addition to his banking and insurance directorships Lord Bethell's business interests included the chairmanship of Frederick Hotels, Limited, and of the British Land Company. A generous supporter of charitable and philanthropic movements, he offered in 1937 to contribute 9,000 to the East Ham Memorial Hospital, with which he had been associated for 40 years, to help clear off a debt of 18,000 on the condition that the governors would try to raise the other half of the sum required.
In 1895 he married Florence, daughter of James Woolley Wyles, of Essex House, East Ham. by whom he had three sons and three daughters. His eldest son, Lieutenant Frank Henry Bethell, The Connaught Rangers, was killed in action in 1915. His second son, the Hon. John Raymond Bethell, who married in 1927 Veronica Eileen, second daughter of Sir James Connolly, has a son and two daughters. Lord Bethell's home was Bushey House, Bushey, Hertfordshire.
