    • The tragic discovery of the body of a Stroud woman in the Thames after she had been missing, was described at the Westminster Coroner's Court, London, to-day. The dead woman was Mrs. Caroline Middleditch (61), of Whitehall, Stroud, and at the inquest the Coroner (Mr. lngleby Oddie) returned a verdict of suicide while of unsound mind.
Mr. Henry Seton Middleditch, of Kensington, identified the body as that of his mother. Mrs. Middleditch was the wife of Mr. Henry Howard Middleditch, hosiery manufacturer. Witness stated that his mother had suffered from mental trouble for about a year. She had recently been staying in a home for mental cases in Gloucestershire kept by a nurse, and under the supervision of a doctor. She had not been certified, and was getting on well. He had heard that she might have had suicidal tendencies since she had been in the home. He last saw his mother in October.
Arthur Smith, labourer, said he saw the body of Mrs. Middleditch in the river near Grosvenor-road at 10.45 a.m. on Wednesday, and P.S. Croft gave evidence of recovering the body. In Mrs. Middleditch's purse was 3/5, a key, a cheque, and two library tickets, one which bore her name and address. A police officer stated that Mrs. Middleditch left the home on January 12, and had been reported missing to the police. Dr. William Fairey, Divisional Police surgeon, said death was due to drowning.
In returning his verdict, the coroner said that Mrs. Middleditch, who was suffering from a nervous breakdown, was regarded at the home as a favourable case, and was consequently allowed a certain amount of freedom of movement. Taking advantage of this she left the home in Gloucestershire, and the next that was heard of her was when her body was recovered. She had spoken of suicide. While there was no direct evidence that she jumped into the river, his view of the case was one of suicide by a person who was not responsible of her action.
