    • Watt.- August 21, at The Rectory, Cheadle, Staffordshire, the Rev. Robert Watt, M.A., late Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, aged 73 years. [Evening Standard 01 Sep 1890]
Death of the Rector of Cheadle. - The Rev. Robert Watt, rector of Cheadle, died at his residence on Thursday morning. The rev. gentleman was appointed rector of Cheadle in 1848, the living being in the patronage of Trinity College, Cambridge, of which he was a fellow. He was in his seventy-fourth year. [Birmingham Daily Post 23 Aug 1890]
    • Preaching on Sunday evening in St James' Church the Rev. G. Grub made the following reference to the late Rector of Cheadle who, besides having relations in this town, was well-known in the district.
"One has lately passed behind the veil, one has entered on his rest, in whom the spirit of oblivion [?] surely dwelt.
The Rector of Cheadle, the Rev. Robert Watt, was well known to many in this place. His grandfather, Dr Memus, was for long the respected Incumbent of this charge. And the grandson was not unmindful of the parish where his sire had ministered. He often worshipped and communicated with us here. This beautiful church, with its hearty services, gave him real pleasure.
As a priest of the Church of England he found in our Scottish Church a welcome at the altar, a place if he chose in the pulpit, and we have here in this sanctuary a thoughtful and valuable token of his kindly interest. The handsome volumes for use at the altar and prayer desks are his generous gifts. It is one of the pleasant thoughts connected with this church that it bears within it so many tokens from so many friends of sympathy and affection. May those who have thus helped and cheered us on our way receive a great reward. May we ever have them in grateful recollection. May their good works follow them from earth to heaven."
