    Notes
    • Betty Tatham (née Hughes), attended Methodist Ladies' College in Launceston, (now Scotch-Oakburn College), before completing her education as a boarder at St. Michael's Collegiate where she was awarded the art prize.
After her marriage in 1933, she moved to King Island, where she spent all her adult life.
She resumed her art studies through adult education classes. She was proficient in both oil and water colour, and was honoured to have one of her paintings hanging in Government House, Hobart.
Sadly Betty passed away in 2010 at the age of 98. She had been unable to paint for the last 25 years due to her failing eyesight. However, at the age of 98 she maintained an interest in Island affairs, and the lives of her 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
In 2006, the King Island community organised an exhibition of her work at the King Island Aged Care annexe where she resided for the last fifteen years of her life.
      Post Script
Betty's blindness was due to Macular Degeneration. It is one of the lesser publicised risks of cigarette smoking. She had not smoked for 40 years, yet it is very likely that it was a factor in the slow and irreversible loss of her sight. She had been a skilled lawn bowler, bridge player, and artist. For the last 15 years she had been unable even to read or watch T.V. and needed full time care. [2]
