    • Major-General O. L. Robinson, C.B., C.M.G., late R.A.M.C., died at his home at Walton-on-Thames on Wednesday at the age of 80. Oliver Long Robinson was born on January 3, 1867, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where for a time he was demonstrator of anatomy. Having qualified in medicine in 1890, he joined the R.A.M.C. in 1891. Much of his service was spent abroad, but he was for a time secretary and registrar of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley. Promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1913 he saw active service in the Near East during the 1914-18 was and was for a time A.D.M.S., having been promoted to Colonel and appointed an honorary physician to the King in 1917. He was mentioned in dispatches and was made a C.M.G. in 1916 and a C.B. in 1919. His appointment as Director of Medical Services in India, a post held alternately by officers of the British and Indian services, took place in 1923, the year following his promotion to the rank of major-general. He had an attractive presence and a pleasant manner and so on the whole was more successful than some of his predecessors in pressing his claims for adequate measures to safeguard the health of the garrison. Moreover, the hospitals of India were then (largely owing to War Office control at a critical period) more up to date than they had been for years. Nevertheless he had his difficulties with the Finance Department and like many a director before him had to submit to the annual passing of medical estimates which he knew to be inadequate. He retired from the post and from the army in 1927. Five years later he was appointed Colonel Commandant of the R.A.M.C. in succession to Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Burtchell and retained the office until 1937. He was twice married, first to Theodosia, daughter of Mr. W. R. Crawford. She died in 1894 and in the following year he married Rose Adela, daughter of the late Sir Henry Leland Harrison. He had four sons and two daughters. [The Times, 23 May 1947]
