- The story of Benskins Watford Brewery began in 1867, when Dyson's Brewery in Lower High Street, Watford, was purchased by Joseph Benskin, a retired hotel keeper.
As a 13-year-old boy, Joseph had run away from the village of Seagrave in Leicestershire where his father was the vicar, and made his way, without money or friends, to London. He became apprenticed to an apothecary and later to the owner of the Castle and Falcon Hotel in the City. After some years of hard work plus considerable business acumen, he was prosperous enough to purchase the "Limmers", said to be the first hotel, as we understand the term, in London.
In about 1865 Joseph retired to Turnham Green, but moved to Watford two years later, attracted by its beautiful surroundings and healthy air.
Joseph Benskin realised that the London and Birmingham Railway would turn Watford into a dormitory area for London, and also increase its industrial potential. He therefore set about developing his private and tied trade in London and Watford. In this he was assisted by his son John Pusey Benskin, who unfortunately suffered from ill-health and early blindness; Joseph, his eldest son, took no part in the business, while his third son, Thomas, trained in London as an architect, and did not enter the business until later.
On Joseph Benskin's death in 1877 the control of the brewery passed to his widow Maria, his son John, and the managing brewer, Walter Green, who married Maria Benskin, Joseph & Maria's daughter.
Mrs Benksin retired in 1884, and her third son, Thomas, then joined the company. The following year John Benksin had to retire through ill-health, and Walter Green then left also.
During the following half century Benkins expanded greatly, becoming one of the larger breweries in England, with 650 pubs, hotels and off-licences in the mid-1950s. Its independent existence came to an end in March 1957, when it was acquired by Ind Coope & Allsopp and became part of the largest brewing concern in the country. The Benskins beers soon disappeared, and the Watford brewery was closed in 1972.
Ind Coope itself was merged in 1961 into Allied Breweries, which was merged in 1992 into the Carlsberg group.
