    • Roy Yglesias, who died recently, and I were colleagues for many years at Longman and were joint managing directors in the early seventies. We had both joined in the late fifties. Roy, fairly unusually for those days had entered educational publishing from teaching, first with Max Parrish (a very small publisher of a kind which could not exist in today's school books market place) and then Longman. The reason he joined Longman is characteristic of both Roy and the time. John Newsom, famous for having become Chief Education Officer of Hertfordshire at the age of twenty-nine (and later for Half Our Future the report on 'the education of less able children') had become, in 1957, a director of Longmans, Green (as it still was). He knew of Roy's work as a teacher at, as his obituarist described it, 'the mildly progressive Sherrardswood independent co-educational school in Welwyn Garden City' and invited him to join Longman 'to do the secondary modern publishing'. Roy went on to run the whole of Longman's U.K. schools publishing.
Roy was also unusual as an educational publisher in being a textbook author and coauthor. He was involved in a number of textbook projects (including for English as a foreign language as well as English as a first language). Perhaps a little surprisingly there was a full page advertisement for his Pleasure in English and Mastery in English (both published by Longman, that is, by himself) opposite the opening section of the article!
