- possibly: Gaspar Roth, of Watteville Regt, King's German Legion. Served 10 years. Sum £18-5s-0d. List no. 8, 10 Jul 1811. [TNA WO 23 - Piece no 23. Royal Hospital Chelsea: admission books, registers, and papers - series created to administer pensions payable by the commissioners to in-pensioners and out-pensioners. Licenciement to invalids: King's German Legion]
- De Watteville's Regiment was a Swiss regiment founded by Louis de Watteville and recruited from regiments that served between 1799 and 1801 in the Austrian army but in British pay. The troops then signed on as mercenaries, to be paid by the British. They fought in the Napoleonic Wars, mainly around the Mediterranean, and were based in Malta and then in Egypt from 1801 to 1803, fighting in Sicily and Naples. From 1811 to 1813 they served under Wellington in the Peninsular War in Spain. The regiment sailed to Canada in 1813 to fight in the War of 1812. It was retired at the end of the war and soldiers were given tracts of land in Canada.[Wikipedia]
In 1805 Sir James Craig said of the regiment: Of the Foreign Corps, The Regiment de Watteville is incontestably the first. It is indeed on a par footing of equality with the other regiments of the old garrison, except that though they are a tall stout body, yet they have a greater proportion of old men among them. I saw, however, but few that could be said to be unserviceable.[TNA:WO 1/293. Craig to W Gordon dated Malta 13 August 1805].
Gaspard Roth would have been aged 34 at that time.
- The King's German Legion was a British Army unit of mostly expatriated German personnel during the period 1803-16. It played a vital role in several campaigns, including the Walcheren Campaign, the Peninsular War, and the Hundred Days, most notably in the Battle of Waterloo. The Legion was disbanded in 1816. [Wikipedia]
- De Watteville's Regiment was not part of the King's German Legion. It is however possible that Gaspard Roth served in both.
