    • Piers Calveley Claughton (1814-1884), was appointed Bishop of Colombo in 1862. From the outset he declared his support for the native ministry and attempted to foster good relations with the protestant churches. Initially reliant on interpreters, he was eventually able to conduct services in Sinhalese, Tamil, and Portuguese; he also learnt Pali in order better to comprehend Buddhist belief. In 1865 he called a synod to prove the right of colonial churches to consult on administrative and doctrinal matters among themselves. This and a subsequent synod were ruled illegal, but both were later acknowledged as crucial first steps towards self-government for the Ceylonese church. In 1870 Claughton resigned his bishopric owing to failing health. In March 1871 he was appointed by Gladstone as archdeacon of London and canon of St Paul's, and in 1875 he became chaplain-general of the forces, a controversial appointment at the time because he had never been a military chaplain. [summarized from DNB]
    • Piers Calveley Claughton's wife Fanny Sarah Clarke (1827-1917) was the daughter of Letitia Twiss (~1802-~1828), first wife of Henry Rose Clarke (~1801-1884). No connection between Letitia Twiss and George Edward Twiss has yet been established.
