- Yesterday afternoon a numerous congregation assembled at the parish church to witness the marriage of the Rev Alfred Edward Buchanan, rector of Selworthy, Somerset (youngest son of the Archdeacon of Wilts), and Miss Margaret Agnes Stevens (daughter of the Rev M. O. Stevens, of Anlaby, Weston-super-Mare). The chancel was decorated with much taste with bloom and foliage. The ceremony was performed by the Ven Archdeacon Buchanan, assisted by the Rev C. H. Chase, M.A. (uncle of the bride and vicar of St. Minven, Cornwall), and the Rector (Prebendary De Salis). The service, which was full choral, opened with "O God our help." The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a dress of ivory Duchesse satin, the train being draped with old Limerick lace (the gift of her father), with sprays of orange blossom and heather. The bodice was also draped with lace, with transparent neck and sleeves of ruched chiffon, with Brussels lace and tulle veil, and a wreath of orange blossoms and heather. She also wore a pearl pendant, and carried a magnificent bouquet of white exotics, the gifts of the bridegroom; also a gold and pearl bracelet, the gift of her brother, who is now in South Africa. The bride was attended by six bridesmaids - Miss Eva Stevens and Miss Katherlne Bailey (cousins), Miss Dorothy Buchanan (sister of the bridegroom), Miss Edith Bridges, and two juveniles, cousins of the bride (Misses J. Stevens and Maud Jones). The senior bridesmaids wore gowns of white soie de chine, with transparent yokes of yellow chiffon, covered with fine white lace, and soft yellow fichus at the side. They wore picture hats trimmed with white crinoline and large ostrich feathers, also gold curb chain bracelets, with monogram and padlock, the gifts of the bridegroom. They also carried shower bouquets of yellow marguerites. The juvenile bridesmaids were prettily attired in dresses of the same material as the seniors, trimmed with lace and lovers' knots formed of yellow bebe ribbon. Their hats were of drawn chiffon with ostrich feathers. They also wore gold and pearl brooches, the gift of the bridegroom, and carried baskets of marguerites. Mr Walter Buchanan (brother of the bridegroom) officiated as best man. "O, Perfect Love," and "Thine for ever" were effectively rendered by the choir, and at the close the "Festive March" (Clark) and Mendelssohn's " Wedding March" were played on the organ by Mr. Bentell. A reception was subsequently held at the Grand Atlantic hotel, and later in the day the happy couple left for the North of England. The presents numbered over 200, and included one from the St. John's Sunday School Bible Class, also from the bellringers and choir and Sunday School at Selworthy. [Bristol Mercury, 13 Jun 1900]
