    Notes
    • The Durham branch of the Christopher family has been traced back link by link to 1545, temp. Henry VIII, and it is said that twice over there were alliances between the Durham, Worcestershire and Lincolnshire branches of the family. [...]
John Christopher, of Billingham, Co. Durham, held lands in that parish from 1545, and died in 1589. He was described in the lease as "Gentleman", and probably came of yeoman stock; his heirs and successors living at Billingham until the close of the following century, when the estate at Norton [...] came into possession of the family. His direct descendant, Richard, who died in 1708, left, with three other sons, a son Robert, who married Miss Frances Cooke, whose son, "William Christopher, Gent.", born in 1747, inheritied the patrimonial estate and married Margaret, daughter of "H. Pooley, Gent.", of Eston, and died without issue. His brother who succeeded left no issue, neither did the other two brothers. Then followed their uncle, John, from whom descended Captain William Christopher. [The Family of Christopher and some others]
    • That all the Norton and Stockton Christophers, however, descend from the above Richard is more than probable, from his being the first who settled at Norton, whence the two subsequent branches both likewise removed, and finally settled, together, at Stockton. Captain William Christopher's wife Anne was daughter of [William] Tatham of Bishopton, near Stockton (which family matched Raisbeck); and his son John Thomas, who died aet. 31, and to whose memory there is an inscription at Norton, married Dorothy daughter of Crozier Surtees, Esq. of Merryshields, by Jane, daughter and co-heir of Robert Surtees of Redworth. Esq. (great-uncle of the historian of Co. Durham), and descended from the Lambtons of Hardwick, and died leaving issue.
