    • An Actress's Secret Marriage.
      Oldfield v. Oldfield and Wimperis.
In this suit Mr. Claude Houghton Oldfield, a chartered accountant, petitioned for a dissolution of his marriage with Edyth Ivy Oldfield, whose maiden name was Tatham, on the grounds of her adultery with Arthur Harold Wimperis.
Mr. Frampton, who appeared for the petitioner, said that the parties were married secretly on June 19, 1913, at the St. Giles's register office. After the marriage the respondent visited the petitioner at Kennington until April, 1914. At that time the respondent was taking part in The Passing Show at the Palace Theatre. She then told her husband that she was in love with the co-respondent, the author of the piece.
The petitioner had tried to persuade her to return to him, but she had refused. He had heard afterwards that she was living with the co-respondent. On June 30, 1914, he had received a letter from her in which she said, "I have been with Arthur nearly five weeks now." She had also asked him to take steps to divorce her.
Evidence of adultery having been given, Mr. Justice Bargrave Dean pronounced a decree nisi. [7]
