    Notes
    • Mrs Arthur Richmond.
      A correspondent writes:
Many who are associated with the National Council for Social Service and especially with the work of the Rural Community Councils will wish to pay a last tribute of thanksgiving for Mrs. Arthur Richmond, who died on the 22nd. Her beauty and graciousness lent a fragrance to the first Conference on Rural Work, which the Council held at St. John's College, Oxford, in 1921, and as hostess for the Council at the annual conferences of later years her delicate courtesy set a tradition which those who follow will strive to maintain. At other times of special pressure she was always ready to help until of recent years her work at Guy's Hospital left her little leisure for anything else. At Guy's she started to build up a library service for patients (in connexion with the British Red Cross Society) which as it exists today is a fine memorial to her. She took infinite pains both to find out personally the interests of patients and to give them the chance to read on those subjects. Very many, under her guidance, discovered the joy of reading for the first time while in hospital. Mrs. Richmond was keenly interested in the establishment of the Guild of Hospital Libraries and was a member of the Guild Committee. Her gentle kindness and her great beauty will remain with us as a very precious memory.
