    Notes
    • Elizabeth, Lady Freeman, M.B.E., was born in 1911, the daughter of Ernest Richmond (son of the painter William Blake Richmond) and Margaret Lubbock (niecc of Lord Avebury). She was educated at Downe House, Newbury.
She lived in Palestine between 1922 and 1934. Her father was a civil servant in the Mandate Government. Being fundamentally opposed to the policy of a Zionist homeland, however, he resigned and took up the non-political post of Director of Antiquities.
Lady Freeman was married in 1935 to Air Vice Marshal Sir Wilfrid Rhodes Freeman. During the war, when she was awarded her M.B.E., she served in the W.R.A.F. as Staff Officer to Air Marshal Leigh-Mallory in the Allied Expeditionary Air Force.
Following the war, she was a reader of the vigorously patriotic journal, Truth, until, under new ownership, it was forced to reflect the internationalist thinking of the Conservative Party's post-war leadership. When A. K. Chesterton, Truth's deputy editor, called a meeting in the summer of 1953 to sponsor a successor journal, Candour, Elizabeth Freeman was the first to offer her unequivocal backing. Later, she joined Candour's campaigning organisation, the League of Empire Loyalists.
In 1959, Lady Freeman moved to the Isle of Mull, where she has lived a full and active life. And to this day, she remains a faithful and indefatigable supporter of the traditionalist cause. [Traditionalist's Anthology, afterword]
