    Notes
    • With the death of Walter Buchanan at Bath has passed a loveable personality, whose artistic and literary knowledge and and kindly disposition endeared him to a host of friends both in London and in the West country. The third son of Thomas Broughton Buchanan, Archdeacon of Wilts, he went up to Queen's College, Oxford, and took his degree in law in 1892. His mother was the daughter of George Richmond RA and it was evidently from her family that he inherited his taste for the fine arts. After leaving Oxford he was admitted as a solicitor in 1898, in which year he entered the famous house of Farrer and Co, of Lincoln's Inn Fields. Eventually he became a partner, in which capacity he continued until about three years ago, when ill-health compelled him to retire. A great reader, especially of naval and military history, he had a fund of knowledge on those subjects which was always available for his friends, and at the United University Club, of which he had been a member for many years, he served on the library committee. He was also a member of the Society for Nautical Research, and his love for naval history and archaeology continued to the last one of his keenest interests - an interest which was no doubt stimulated by the career and literary labours of his distinguished cousin, Admiral Sir Herbert Richmond. Of a retiring disposition, amounting almost to shyness, Walter Buchanan did not marry, but those who had the privilege of his friendship will not soon forget his sparse and trim figure, with the delicately chiselled features - the features of a scholar who found solace and contentment among his books and friends. [The Times, obituary, 23 Jan 1932]
