- Canon Thomas Boughton Buchanan, formerly Archdeacon of Wilts and canon residentiary of Salisbury Cathedral, was found dead in his bed on Saturday. He was 91. The eldest son of Thomas Cox Buchanan, of St. Mary Crypt, Gloucester, he went up to Exeter College, Oxford, where he obtained a first in Classical Moderations. He was ordained in 1857 to the curacy of Wilton, and was for a time chaplain to Lord Herbert of Lea (Mr. Sidney Herbert). In 1863 he became rector of Wishford Magna, and in 1870 Dr. Moberly, who had recently succeeded to the Bishopric of Salisbury, made him his chaplain, and four years later appointed him Archdeacon of Wilts. Bishop John Wordsworth added a residentiary canonry in 1894. Archdeacon Buchanan was vicar of Potterne for 20 years and rector of Poulshot for 14 years. He resigned his archdeaconry in 1911 and his residentiary canonry in 1914, retaining, however, his connection with the Cathedral as canon or prebendary of Bedminster and Radcliffe. Since his retirement he had lived in Salisbury Close. He married Laura Maria, daughter of George Richmond, R.A., and sister of Sir W. B. Richmond, R.A. She died in 1915. [The Times] [7]
