    Notes 
    • Captain Hugh Abbot, who has died, was born in 1870 in Guildford. He was educated at Wellington and Trinity College, Cambridge. At school he established what was then a record by winning in 1889 the 100 yards, the quarter-mile, the half-mile, and the long jump; and he was also placed second in each of the following:- 200 yards, one mile, two miles, the steeplechase, and the walking race. At Trinity College, Cambridge, he won in three successive years the half-mile (1890-1-2). He obtained his blue for running. After leaving the University he entered the brewing business and went to South Africa as manager of the Rhodesian Breweries, Limited. Throughout the South African War he fought as a Rhodesian Volunteer. He returned to this country, and after many years of brewing he was recognized as a great expert on bottled beer. He became technical editor of an important brewing paper and official lecturer on brewing at the Sir John Cass Technical Institute. His publications included many scientific papers on brewing and bottling. During the Great War he served in France with the RFA. He married in 1916 [recte: 1917] Evelyn Fothergill Robinson, daughter of Vice-Chancellor Robinson, Duchy of Lancaster. [The Times, Obituaries, 26 Oct 1933]

    • The marriage of Captain Hugh Abbot, RFA, son of the late Rev F W [recte: F J] Abbot, and Miss Evelyn Fothergill Robinson, daughter of the late Mr William Fothergill Robinson, QC, Vice-Chancellor of the County Palatine of Lancaster, took place very quietly at St Philip's Church, Earls Court Road, yesterday. The bride, who was given away by her brother-in-law, Lieutenant W B Medlicott, wore a dress of plum-coloured ninon over white, with a bunch of lilies of the valley and white heather at the waist, a black and silver brocade hat, and her ornaments were a pearl necklace and pearl earrings. The Rev W H Abbot, MC, Chaplain to the Forces, brother of the bridegroom, was best man.
