    Notes
    • The sudden death, in his office in Lincoln's Inn Fields, of Mr. Arthur Richmond Farrer, at the age of 67, removes a well-known member of one of the oldest firms of solicitors in London, the business having been founded by Oliver Farrer about 1760. Mr. Frank Farrer, his cousin, who was for many years a member of the firm, died in June last year, and the head of the family, Mr. J. A. Farrer, of Ingleborough, Yorkshire, who was the father of Reginald Farrer, the botanist and imaginative writer, died in June of this year.
Mr. A. R. Farrer was the eldest son of Mr. Frederick Willis Farrer, and a nephew of the first Lord Farrer of Abinger, the political economist, and of Sir W. J. Farrer. He was sent, like most of his family, to Eton, where he was in Rev. Edmond Warre's house. Going up to New College, Oxford, he took his degree with a second class in Modern History in 1880, and was admitted as a solicitor in 1886. He was greatly interested in the historical side of his profession and had grave doubts as to the effect on English country life of the Law of Property Amendment Act and the abolition of manors, for which he thought no really practical substitute was offered. But, as he said, the business of a lawyer is to make the best for his clients of the laws as passed, and not to attempt to theorize, and his constant advice was to avoid litigation where possible. His tastes were naturally country tastes. He was a keen fisherman for 30 years in the River Shin, and in earlier days was devoted to shooting at Ingleborough and elsewhere. His mother was a daughter of George Richmond, R.A., and he himself was an artist of no mean skill. He was also a keen Volunteer, and commanded in England during the South African War the 3rd Middlesex Volunteer Artillery, doing much recruiting at that time. He married in 1890 Charlotte Mary Easton, and leaves two sons. [The Times, 31 Oct 1925]
