    • King's Bench Division. In re Ernest Bradley Browne, stock and share dealer. Before Mr Registrar Giffard.
Bankruptcy. The public examination was held of Ernest Bradley Browne, who had carried on business as Martin Bull and John Hardy, and had filed a statement of affairs showing liabilities amounting to 6,334 4s. 8d. and assets 1,938 10s. 7d.
In answer to Mr. W. P. Bowyer, Assistant Official Receiver, the bankrupt stated that he was 26 years of age, and since April, 1905, had been an outside stock and share dealer, his business consisting in gambling for differences in stocks and shares. Before February, 1908, the business was carried on under the name of Martin Bull, at Fenchurch-buildings, E.C., and afterwards under the style of John Hardy, in Bishopsgate-street Within, E.C. His failure was due to the heavy expenses of circularizing for clients, to bad debts incurred through his clients' failing to pay the differences which resulted from their dealings, to losses which he incurred in his own speculations on the Stock Exchange, and in a small degree to losses by betting. He sent out circulars broadcast to the public inviting them to buy or sell particular stocks. His advice was usually against his own interests in regard to the particular transaction advised upon, as he would usually lose if his client won. In the majority of cases he suggested a purchase, on the ground that certain stock would probably rise, and, if his suggestion was acted upon and the stock rose, he was usually the loser, as he did not often "hedge." His object was to open accounts, with a view to the clients' subsequently speculating under influences other than his own. As a rule he asked for cover. In 1906 he first fell behind in his payments to clients, and then made arrangements for the payment by instalments of the amounts due. He could not pay his debts when he changed his business name from Bull to Hardy. The change was made in the hope that he would meet with better fortune and the business was continued in the expectation that the number of speculators would increase. His statement of affairs showed that he now owed 5,900 to clients, this sum mainly representing paper losses. There were also debts due to him from clients, all of whom could plead the Gaming Act.
The examination was formally adjourned for the production of a banker's passbook. [The Times]
