Notes |
- John Murray - always "Tats" to his wife - lived and worked in Lesotho for a number of years until about 1956, land surveying in the roughest mountain conditions. He and Elsie lived under canvas for a long time (imagine the cold) and later in traditional huts. They rode Basuto ponies for surveying, for shopping excursions and for visiting. The only roads in their area were no more than steep pony pathways. Elsie would ride many miles unaccompanied to the local trading store for provisions, leading a pack mule, with Dawn as pillion behind her and little Shirley in front. Quite something for the ultimate 'townie'. By the time their third daughter Carole was born they'd developed a road and enjoyed a modicum more comfort.
