- Thenceforward for the next few days the 1st Battalion was shelled continuously, and there were several sharp little fights with the enemy's patrols (Casualties during November 16th-19th:-13 killed, 1 officer and 26 other ranks wounded. The officer, 2nd [sic] Lieut. R. M. Slater, a very gallant young subaltern, was mortally wounded and died on the 21st November 1914). - The following account of the circumstances under which he was wounded has been received. "One of his men was lying seriously wounded. Slater went out and brought him in, and was hit on the top of the head by a bullet. For the moment he was dazed, but for the rest of the day he was cheery and bright. When taken to the hosptial at night his case was declared hopeless. He was well spoken of in the regiment as a promising polo player." [Wellington Year Book, 1914]

- Ronald-Mortimer Slater, b. 2 Oct., 1891; educ. at Windlesham House, Brighton, Wellington College, and Sandhurst, was gazetted March, 1911, to the 1st Bn. Worcestershire Regt.; promoted to Lieut., Sept., 1914. He died of wounds, 21 Nov., 1914, in Merville Hospital, France, and was buried in the Cemetery at Merville. [Curtis]
- Lieutenant Ronald Mortimer Slater, 1st Battn. Worcestershire Regiment, who died of wounds on the 21st November, 1914, in France, was the son of the late Major M. J. Slater, R.E., an Old Wellingtonian, and of Mrs. Slater, Lionel Road, Bexhill, and grandson of the late Colonel J. M. Slater, N.L.I. He was born on the 2nd October, 1891, and was educated at Wellington (The Hill), 1905-09, proceeding to R.M.C., Sandhurst, in the latter year. He was gazetted to the Worcestershire Regiment in March, 1911, and was promoted to Lieutenant in September, 1914.
