    • Harding Edmund Tatham (Eddie) Born in 1885. He surveyed and built the old road from Ladysmith to Newcastle. He was Compound Manager at Sub Nigel. He farmed at Utrecht, Newcastle and Nigel. He was a Land Surveyor in Dundee. He married Beatrice Gage (1884-1969). He died in 1940. [TFSA]
    • The currently dormant Sub Nigel and Spaarwater gold mines are situated 1km northwest of the town of Nigel on the East Rand. The Sub Nigel mine produced 15 million ounces of gold from the Nigel Reef between 1909 and 1971. A total of 29.7 million tonnes of ore were milled during this period.
