- Travelled from Calcutta to Europe on HEIC ship Minerva Dec 1819. His father John Mitford Rees had died in Calcutta, aged 40, on 11 Nov 1819.

- Younger sister Mary (or Maria) Isabella Irwin Rees (1820-1910); born Calcutta in 1820. Family returned to England soon after death of John Mitford Rees; lived in the early 1820s in Devon; friendly with local branches of Tennyson and Thackeray families. In 1851, Mary Rees married Augustus Brotherton, artist. She published poetry and at least two novels, was a lively letter-writer, and was friendly with all the leading writers of the day.
