    • Mr. Philip Ingram Davis is the Managing Director of the "Natal Witness Ltd.," and served, as Captain, with the Natal Carabineers in the German S.W. Africa Campaign; and, as Captain, in the 2nd Mounted Brigade in the German East Africa Campaign, in which he suffered severely from Fever. [Curtis]

      Son of Peter Davis, Proprietor Natal Witness. Marr [Ada Lilian Joan] Tatham; 2 daughters. Address : Parkside, Pietermaritzburg. Other information : Proprietor of 'The Natal Witness', 'The Natal Advertiser' and of the firm of P Davis & Sons Ltd. He represented Loretto at rugby for 2 years. On his return to SA he spent a few years in Pietermaritzburg before transferring to Durban as Manager of 'The Natal Advertiser'. Joined the Natal Carbineers, 1907, receiving a commission in 1912. Was in German South-West Africa in 1914 with the Central Force and later A.D.C. to Lieut.-Col. D.W.Mackay of the 7th Mounted Brigade. Then saw service as a Lieutenant in German East-AFrica with the 8th S.A Horse; was invaded, and later joined the Mechanical Transport. In 1921 he was adjutant of the Natal Carbineers, and afterwards transferred to the Union Reserve of Officers with rank of Captain. Played for Wasp's R.F.C. (1907-1911) and later for Old Collegians in Durban until 1914. Is interested in all sports: Golf, Lawn Tennis, etc. Vice-President, Pietermaritzburg Motor Cycle Club, Natal Kennel Club, and S.A. Polo Association, Member, Victoria Club, City Sporting Club, Durban Club, and a foundation member of the Durban Country Club. Has resided in Maritzburg since 1919 and from 1921 has been Managing Director of 'The Natal Witness', established in 1846 Twelve years ago married a daughter of the Hon. Justice F.S Tatham. D.S.O.
