    • Mrs. Tatham died on Sunday evening, 1 May [1927], and was buried on Tuesday, 3 May, at the Church of England Cemetery, Maritzburg, the Service being conducted by the Bishop of Natal. She never fully recovered from the terrible shock of losing three favourite grandsons in the Great War. The results of a broken hip four months before her death hastened the end. Notes
    • Adolphus Henry Noon, a Mormon Elder, and his brother Arthur N. Noon were sugar planters on the Isipingo River from about 1860 to 1863. Their sisters were Clara Jane and Susan Noon. Clara is better known as the wife of Richard ('Dick') King, also of Isipingo, the Natal colonist who undertook the famous ride to Grahamstown in 1842, taking news of the besieged British Garrison at the Port and enabling reinforcements to be sent by HMS Southampton and William Bell's schooner Conch, which ended the siege. The younger Noon sister, Susan, married another famous Natalian, Robert Bristow Tatham. A brother to the Noon siblings, Charles, died in England in infancy; Kent was their home county, and all were born and baptized there. [The Noon Family in Natal accessed 15 Feb 2010]
    • Judge Tatham pays this fine tribute to his mother:- "The outstanding qualities of her character were her courage, her broad-mindedness, and her self-sacrifice. Resolute courage and determination ruled her life, and her tender thoughts and consideration for those in distress compelled her to sacrifice herself under all circumstances if she could thereby minister to their needs. Her sister, the widow of the famous Dick King, whose ride from Durban to Grahamstown to bring relief to the British Garrison, then besieged in Durban, is well known, predeceased her some years ago. [Curtis quoting Natal Witness, 4 May, 1927]
    • Also Adolphus Henry Noon b England 22 Jun 1838 [IGI, no source]
    • Two of this surname were among the settlers who arrived at Table Bay, in the "Stentor", 19 April, 1820, namely Richard Noon, aged 21, unm., in the Yorkshire party directed by James Richardson; and Richard Noon, aged 18, unm., in the Nottinghamshire party directed by Lieut. Thomas White; see British South Africa, pp. 150, 152, 1897, by Colin Turing Campbell. [Curtis] [Note: no known connection with either of these families]
    • I have at last recd a letter from Dear Susy. I am sorry that in consequence of her letter to me having been returned to her by the Post office authorities by reason that I had not left my address when I removed from Hackney. I say I am sorry that I was induced to express myself so warmly on the subject of not hearing from her respecting her marriage which I find was one of affection and not of pecuniary interest. I cordially wish her and her Husband every happiness, and if she or he can manage to send some interesting African object worth receiving I shall be glad and much obliged. [Letter 04 Nov 1861, her father Charles Whitaker to her brother Adolphus Noon]

    Notes
    • Adolphus Henry Noon questioned his father, Charles Peter Whitaker, about the marital status with his mother, Susan, and his response was an injured "of course we were married" but there is no proof of any sort that they were. It is unknown what triggered the desire for Adolphus to question the marriage status of his parents but it would appear he had strong doubts. [Tom Montgomery]
    • I do not understand what you infer by asking me such an extraordinary question "whether your mother was not more or less deceived in relation to the legality of the marriage ceremony" - I answer, certainly not! [Letter, 02 Nov 1863, Charles Whitaker to his sons Adolphus & Alonzo]

    • Then I fell in love with my dear wife who I met at a Ball. She was very pretty and the sister in law of a Sugar Planter here (her brothers were also planters) - The family objected for which I cared nothing. I had her consent, and as I did not want anything more, I obtained a licence, took out to their farm a led horse with a ladies saddle, put my dear girl on the horse, mounted my own, took off my hat to the brothers etc. and rode off to the nearest church (where by the bye I had taken the clergyman) and was married! - This I have found was the one bright, amongst the many foolish things I have been guilty of.
