    Notes
    • Natal owes to Mrs. F. S. Tatham a debt of gratitude that should never be forgotten, since Time can only arouse a greater appreciation, for the foundation of the Fine Art Gallery at Pietermaritzburg, recently (1926) enlarged and re-arranged. Of great natural and highly cultivated taste, Mrs. Tatham had long realized the great importance, for the rising generation, educationally, of encouraging and fostering the Arts and Crafts of all kinds, especially in comparatively new countries like Natal. Endowed with imagination and foresight, gifts rare as they are precious, she saw the supreme value of having a really representative Art Gallery at Maritzburg. In spite of a great deal of apathy and indifference, not yet wholly vanquished, Mrs. Tatham had herself, by 1903, collected funds sufficient to enable her to inaugurate such an admirable idea. In that year, 1903, she and the Hon. Mr. Justice Tatham, D.S.O., as he has since become, visited Europe and secured the nucleus of the present collection of pictures for the Gallery since founded at Maritzburg, including one exhibited that year by Dorothy, Lady Stanley, relict of the famous African explorer. Incidentally it may be mentioned that from this meeting dates the long-standing friendship between the two families, from which, eventually, also originated the inspiration for the compilation of the present typescript Notes on the Family of Tatham of co. Durham, England. [Curtis]
    • Tatham, (Mrs) Ada Susan. Wife of F. S. Tatham, Esquire, K.C., Lt.-Col. S.A. Militia Forces. Born at Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Daughter of William Molyneux, Esquire, F.G.S., F.R.H.S. Educated at Eastbourne, England. Has resided in S.A. 31 years. Club: Lyceum, Piccadilly, London, W. Was a Member of the Relief Committee of the Lord Mayor's Fund (S.A. War 1899-1902). Founded Art Gallery, Pietermaritzburg, in 1904, by moneys subscribed and voted by Corporation; in 1903 selected the pictures in England. Collected funds from women and children of Natal for the portrait of Queen Victoria now hung in Pietermaritzburg Town Hall. Was for 8 years Hon. Secretary of the Annual Art Exhibition held in Pietermaritzburg. 3 sons, 3 daughters. Her 2 eldest sons were educated at Marlborough College; the youngest was the Colonial nominee of the Natal Government for the Navy in 1910, and is now at Osborne Royal College, Isle of Wight, England. Residence: 200, Pine Street, Pietermaritzburg, Natal. [Women of South Africa, 1913]
    • The Gallery collection owes its origins in 1903 to Mrs Ada Susan Tatham (née Molyneux), who came to Natal with other members of her family in 1881. In 1887 she married Frederick Spence Tatham, barrister, soldier and politician. Apart from assisting in her husband's election campaigns, she was active on the Relief Committee in 1899 to find homes for refugees during the Second Anglo-Boer War, and was keenly interested in history and art. She was clearly civic-minded, belonging to and serving on various bodies such as the SPCA, the Girl Guides and the Pietermaritzburg Art Society. Wealthy and well-connected, she held a position of some influence in society, which she used with great energy in the formation of a permanent art gallery for Pietermaritzburg.
