    Jacob Leroux (d. 1799)
    Jacob Leroux (d. 1799)
    Will of 11 Apr 1799, proved 07 May 1799
    Notes
    • Original developer of Somers Town, St Pancras, in 1780s and 1790s, on land at Brill Farm leased from Charles Cocks, later Lord Somers. It included The Polygon, a 16-sided block of 32 dwellings in Clarendon Square.
    • Jacob Leroux appears several times in William Godwin's diaries. Godwin meets him in 1792, has contact again in 1797, and records his death and the later sale of his goods in 1799. The Times of 15 June 1799 advertises a lot of 40 houses in the Somerstown/Polygon area of London due to the recent demise of Jacob Leroux. He appears to have been a landlord of some wealth in Godwin's neighbourhood and it seems highly likely that Godwin rented property from him from 1792. [Bodleian Library catalog]
    • Architect of Cams Hall, Fareham, a Palladian mansion set in parkland overlooking Portsmouth Harbour. Constructed of Portland stone and yellow bricks around 1770.
