    Notes 
    • Mr. Oliver Thornycroft, C.B., O.B.E., formerly Director of Aeronautical and Engineering Research at the Admiralty, died on Friday at his home in London at the age of 71. Oliver Thornycroft was born on April 19. 1885, the son of the late Sir Hamo Thornycroft, R.A., and was educated at Bedales School and Clare College, Cambridge. During the 1914-18 War he was granted a commission in the R.N.V.R, and was attached to the R.N.A.S., and for the whole period between the wars he was works manager and chief engineer with Messrs. Ricardo and Co. His service at the Admiralty during the 1939-45 War was in the department concerned with mines and anti-submarine weapons but in 1946 he was appointed Director of Aeronautical and Engineering Research and held the post until 1950. Since then he had been in practice on his own account as a consultant. He married in 1911 Dorothy, daughter of the late Edward Rose, who survives him, together with two sons and three daughters of the marriage. [The Times, obituary, 29 Aug 1956]
