    • A correspondent writes:
Miss Eleanor C. Christopher, Principal of St. Hild's College, Durham, from 1910 to 1933, died on February 18 at her home in Winchester at the age of 85.
The daughter of a naval officer, Henry Seton Christopher, J.P., she was born in Canada but spent her early years in the Isle of Man when her father became bursar at King William's College. She took her degree in Modern Languages at Oxford and taught in Liverpool before becoming headmistress of Leamington High School. In 1910 she became the first woman principal of St. Hild's College, Durham, and during her régime the college took on the shape of a modern training college.
The old dormitories were converted into study bedrooms and new buildings were added; educationally, the college was set on progressive lines. A firm link was established between the college and the schools and one of her institutions, the gardening show, became a general focus of interest and a link between successive generations of students.
Miss Christopher's interests were wide. She was a popular hostess and a good friend and she was active in local organizations as president of the Society for Equal Citizenship and of the local branch of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, and as a commissioner of Girl Guides. After retirement she carried on her public work on Winchester City Council and after the war in work for refugees.
Her influence on her students was immense and lasting; large numbers of them corresponded with her and visited her right up to her death. Their devotion is a measure of her lasting contribution to education in the North-East. [Obituary, The Times] [6]
