    Notes
    • Mr R. C. Tatham, formerly an orthopaedic surgeon in Hull, died on 19 April at his home at Boars Hill, Oxford, after a long disabling illness. He was 81.
Reginald Cyril Tatham was born on 19 September 1901 at Watford, the youngest of the seven children of an import and export trader in the city of London. From an early age he wanted to become a doctor, an ambition which his mother was determined should be fulfilled, often against difficult odds. He was educated at Felsted School before going to the Middlesex Medical College, where he qualified with the conjoint diploma in 1924. The following year he worked as a ship's surgeon for the Blue Funnel Line and went round the world twice.
Having decided that he wanted to do orthopaedics, he returned to the Middlesex, where he did a succession of resident surgical jobs, finishing up as orthopaedic registrar and gaining the FRCS in 1930. In 1932 he married Kathleen Searle, and in 1934 he went to Trinidad, hoping to establish an orthopaedic service in Port of Spain, but his hopes did not materialise. In 1935 on his way back to England he met and was befriended by Dr Louis Lavine, a senior physician at Hull Royal Infirmary. He persuaded Tatham to go to Hull, where his services were needed. In 1936 he became resident surgical officer at Hull Royal Infirmary, and later the same year he was appointed an honorary assistant surgeon.
At that time fractures and orthopaedics were usually dealt with by the general surgeons, but he persuaded the hospital governors to let him start a pure fracture and orthopaedic service in 1937. Shortly before Hitler annexed Austria Tatham and another young surgeon were able to visit the fracture clinic run by Professor Bohler in Vienna.
In 1939 Reg (as he was popularly known) volunteered for active service but to his regret was rejected on medical grounds, a fortunate event as it turned out, since he was able to do invaluable work on the many casualties which subsequently occurred during the repeated bombing of Hull. In his younger days he had been a keen and talented tennis player and also enjoyed dinghy sailing, but when he retired from the NHS in 1966 he devoted most of his spare time to his beautiful garden. In July 1969 he suffered a massive stroke, and the following year he went to live near Oxford with his daughter Valerie.
In 1970 [1971] Reg lost his wife, and for the next 13 years, until his death from a further stroke, he received the constant attention, love, and devotion of his daughter Valerie.
He was a kind, unassuming man, devoted to his work and admired and respected by his many friends, colleagues and patients. He is survived by one brother and by his daughter. JRB. [British Medical Journal, 28 May 1983]
