- The funeral of Sir William Richmond, R.A., will take place at 2 o'clock to-day at St. Nicholas Church, Chiwick. On behalf of the King, Lord Stamfordham has sent the following telegram to Sir William's relatives:-- "The King much regrets to hear of the death of Sir William Richmond, and desires me to convey to his family the expression of his true sympathy in the loss that has befallen them." [The Times, Tue 15 Feb 1921]
- The funeral of Sir William Richmond, R.A.,took place yesterday at Chiswick. The first part of the service was held in the Old Parish Church. The mourners included Colonel Smith-Neill, representing Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll; Mrs. Meyrick (daughter), Rear-Admiral H. W. Richmond (son) and Mrs. Richmond, and Mr. Walter Richmond (brother). The service was conducted by Canon Meyrick, of Norwich, assisted by the Rev. E. P. Gough, the vicar. The coffin, which was perfectly plain, was covered with two pieces of tapestry, and the handles, which were of wrought iron, were of William Morris design. Wreaths were sent by Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, the Royal Academy, and the Coal Smoke Abatement Society (of which Sir William Richmond was the founder). [The Times, Wed 16 Feb 1921]

Notes |
- Sir William-Blake Richmond, K.C.B., R.A., D.C.L., LL.D., M.A.; Slade Professor of Fine Arts, Oxford; Portrait Painter. He was appointed by the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's Cathedral to decorate with Mosaic the Choir and Dome. This work, though very beautiful, caused much discussion from 1890 to 1898. [Curtis]
- When the designs were approved Richmond had them enlarged to the exact scale of the space which they would occupy, with every line strongly marked, and then coloured according to the tones of the design and of the tessarae. Most of the several designs so enlarged were exhibited in position in the Cathedral so that their effect might be judged. The enlargement and colouring having been completed, the design was then transferred in pieces of suitable sizes to tracing paper, and handed to the artificers for execution in the tessarae on the cement. The artificers pierced the pattern through the lines with a bradawl on a space of cement affixed to the brickwork of such a size as not to dry up and become hard before the day's work was finished. The debt of the Cathedral to Sir William's scholarly enthusiasm can never be sufficiently acknowledged. [W.M. Sinclair, 'Memorials of St Paul's Cathedral']

Notes |
- About 1826 Richmond fell in love with Julia (1811-1881), the beautiful fourteen-year-old sister of the Tatham brothers, whose father had engaged Richmond to give her drawing lessons. Although old Tatham had encouraged the romance, his diminishing fortune brought a change of mind when a rich and elderly suitor expressed interest in Julia. Learning of this, the young couple - encouraged by Palmer, who loaned Richmond £40 - eloped to Gretna Green, where they were married on 24 January 1831. Back in London, Richmond set up home at 27 Northumberland Street, New Road, sending Julia to stay for the time being with Palmer's father at Shoreham. Meanwhile John Linnell persuaded Tatham that Richmond had a promising future. Tatham forgave them, and within three weeks George and Julia were reunited: their marriage proved to be long and happy. They had fifteen children, of whom ten survived infancy; with this growing family Richmond needed a reliable income, and he spent most of his remaining working life painting portraits. [DNB 2009]
