    • A verdict of suicide whilst of unsound mind was returned at the inquest at Sheffield of Robert Cholerton Hayes, aged 42, who died from poisoning. It was stated that the Lieutenant-Commander was put on the retired list of the Navy in 1922. He was later appointed by the Colonial Office to the Malay States, but prior to that he had two attacks of sunstroke, and had suffered from recurrent malaria. He returned from the Malay States after three years and was pronounced medically unfit. Since then he had had no occupation. According to his brother-in-law, the Rev. Edwin Scott [husband of his sister Alice M Hayes], vicar of St. Paul's, Morley, Leeds, the commander was separated from his wife, and had not communicated with her since their separation.
