Notes |
- Ann, was a second cousin of the celebrated wit, Lord Alvanley, and was herself very quick at repartee. She was a leader of fashion in Stockton and Norton. When walking out alone she was usually followed by a footman carrying her umbrella, and the following story was told of her: One year, in London, a rather new country footman, who was doing duty with the umbrella, was so distracted by the London streets that he lost sight of his lady. Being at a loss to find her, he said to the nearest passer-by, "Where is my mistress?" receiving in reply, "I do not know who she is." The footman indignantly retorted, "Why, in Stockton everyone knows her!" [Capt A C Seton Christopher, The Family of Christopher and Some Others, priv. circ. 1934]
- There is confusion on whether the "second cousin of the celebrated wit, Lord Alvanley" was Ann Tatham (1743-1784), wife of William Christopher, or her mother Alice Raisbeck (1708- ), wife of William Tatham.
Curtis says of Alice Raisbeck that "she and her step-cousin, Mrs. Whitmore, of London, were 2nd cousins of Lord Alvanley."
In this he seemingly followed the 1832 Tatham-Christopher pedigree chart: "Mrs William Tatham & Mrs Whitmore the elder were 1st cousins and 2d cousins to the late [...] afterwards Lord Alvanley."
The connection with Mrs Whitmore, whoever she was, has not been worked out.
The connection with the Alvanley family seems to be through Alice Raisbeck's mother, Esther Rudd (1673- ). The transcriber of the Durham Cathedral registers (early 20th cent.) says of the Rudd family "They are now represented by Wilbraham of Rode, Cheshire".
How the Rudd and Wilbraham families were related is not yet known.
The 1st Lord Alvanley, Richard Pepper Arden (1744-1804), married in 1784 Anne Dorothea Wilbraham-Bootle (1757-1825), daughter of Richard Wilbraham (1724-1796), of Rode; son of Randle Wilbraham (1691-1770).
This Lord Alvanley was not at all a "celebrated wit"; that was his son William (1789-1849), 2nd Lord Alvanley, well-known Regency buck, friend of Beau Brummell and member of the Prince Regent's circle.
In view of the dates, the family relationships could be:
- 1st cousins: Esther Rudd (1673- )& Randle Wilbraham (1691-1770);
- 2nd cousins: Alice Raisbeck (1708- ) & Richard Wilbraham (1724-1796);
= 3rd cousins: Ann Tatham (1743-1784) & Anne Dorothea Wilbraham-Bootle (1757-1825) (wife of Alvanley I);
- 3rd cousins 1x removed: Ann Tatham (1743-1784) & William Arden (1789-1849) (Alvanley II).
But it is still puzzling. Whatever the exact degree of kinship, Ann Tatham was 46 years older than her supposed cousin the celebrated wit, and died 5 years before he was born; whilst her mother Alice Raisbeck (Mrs William Tatham) was 81 years older. Why was the connection thought to be of any interest?
