    • Henry de Grey Warter, junior, and the theatre.
Henry Warter was on the stage as a low comedian by 1860. Sometime before 1863 he changed his name to Richard Barker, seemingly on the coat-tails of Irish actress/comedienne, Maria Cruise, whom he was to later marry. He became an actor, and had been associated with the Bath amateurs. On joining the theatrical profession, he played Colonel Pointdexter in Dion Boucicault's The Octoroon, as a member of the Bristol company, but proved a poor actor. In his earliest association with Shakespeare on the Bristol stage, he appeared in King John as the messenger, a character to whom the Bard has assigned a dozen important lines; Barker rushed through the opening four of them, but then "dried up". He married Maria Cruise, under his birth name Warter, on 04 Jul 1865 in Plymouth, and subsequently migrated to London, where, having abandoned his wife, he achieved great success as a producer of comic opera.
He became a pioneering British director of musicals and operettas, and spent a portion of his career in America. At the same time he pursued a career as a stage director for stock companies and, eventually, London productions. Barker excelled at musical burlesques, operettas, and opera comiques and was one of the first highly paid directors in London, his services considered worth the price. He was long associated with producer Richard D'Oyly Carte and staged many productions at the Savoy Theatre, including works by Gilbert and Sullivan. Barker came to New York in the 1880s and restaged some of his London successes, as well as new pieces, and then returned to England in 1900 to resume his association at the Savoy. Among his thirty-eight New York credits were The Lion Tamer (1891), The Little Trooper (1894), The Chieftain (1895), The Little Corporal (1898), and the first Broadway productions of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado (1885), Ruddigore (1887), and The Yeomen of the Guard (1888). In a day when directors of musical were little more than traffic managers on stage, Barker had very definite ideas about the movement of actors and the importance of creating an overall visual effect. His work in New York influenced the next generation of American directors and led to a more cohesive staging of musicals. He died in London on 01 Aug 1903.
His wife, Maria, retired to Clifton, where she died at 8 Park Place on 28 Aug 1887, and was buried in Arnos Vale Catholic cemetery, Bristol, on 01 Sep 1887.
