    • In his will, dated 5 July 1752, he desires to be "bur. in the burying place of my late wife Mary in the churchyard of Sunderland, and to be carried to the grave by 6 of the poorest of my keelmen [worker on a barge]. He mentions his "present wife Elizabeth", his dau. Elizabeth, and his son Ralph, also his brother William Tatham and his children. Tuition and guardianship of the testator's children at Houghton-le-Spring to their mother Elizabeth. Besides messuages, lands, tenements and hereditaments in Sunderland, and ' all my lead mines and parts or shares of lead mines in the county of Cumberland", he possessed several copyhold estates - copyhold messuages, lands, tenements and hereditaments in the parish of Bishop Wearmouth, and her refers to "the copyhold estate there late belonging to [my] said late wife Mary ...". He alludes to his plate etc, and bequeathed his "tea table, china, family pictures and seal with my own coat of arms and 6 of my best large silver spoons and all my tea spoons" to his dau Elizabeth; "if she die before her age of twenty one years and day of marriage", then the testator gives the same to his son Ralph. [Curtis pp 8-9]
    • By his will he had appointed I think his friend a Mr. Lambton (whose descendant became the Earl of Durham) to be his Executor, and directed that his body should be carried to his grave by his six keelmen. [Charles Tatham, Recollections]
